Unimpressed.

The strange people that live in The Rickety Old Farmhouse are up and about at 5.30 opening windows and topping up the pool. Two shaggy dogs can be seen hurtling round the garden.

The grass which managed to stay green until the start of the month is now parched. Angus is rationing the amount of water that goes through the irrigation system . What's left of the garden would be well and truly finished off if the well was to run dry in August. Thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday. They will be welcomed.

From the poolside Angus chats to Japanese men in dark suits. We discuss the seizing of tankers in the Gulf . The world wanted a less engaged America. The world is about to get a lesson in getting what you wish for. The men in dark suits seem rather perplexed by change. The PONs turn on their backs for a quick doze.

Angus considers a strawberry tart in the bakers but we still have two thirds of a post-birthday chocolate cake to finish. The PONs get given a piece of choux pastry . Bob gives the bakers wife a look that suggests that she, and she alone, is the love of his life. Sophie is grateful but also disappointed that the choux pastry slivers don't keep on coming.

Before it gets too hot there's a post croissant walk through the sunflowers to the little stream.

So starts a hot Thursday morning in deepest, deepest France profonde.

The pons are good at posing today. I smiled at the thought of them racing around at 5.30am. I don't mind getting up early in the summer - winter is much harder. Is it hot overnight as well?

Two thirds of the birthday cake to finish. I am guessing that the 'one cuts, the other chooses' strategy is redundant in the ROF?
Good to see Bob and Sophie on fine posing form despite the heat.
Cheers, Gail.

It hasn't dropped below 30 the last 3 nights. Heat during the day is one thing but Sophie finds it difficult to settle at night. She now has two fans running full throttle to keep her comfortable at night. We've also ordered chill mats to see if that helps.

I'll be interested to know if the chill mats work. I will order one for Inca, if they do. At the moment she's making do with the cool tiles, but they will be warm by August.
We have the windows open and the mosquito screens in place, so do keep reasonably cool and unbitten overnight. Haven't had to resort to the air conditioning yet. It's so annoying to have to hide away when it gets so hot outdoors. We're counting the days until the end of September !
Still have some birthday cake to eat? Angus, you're showing remarkable restraint - or has 'The Font' hidden it away and is only allowing small pieces if you've been good?

There's talk of "Britain's" heatwave here... it should read "England's", because even to reach the mid 20s up here North of the border is still more of wishful thinking than an actuality - certainly here on the West coast. Wish I could send you some of the stiff, cool breeze forcing its way through the Hutch's windows right now. YAM xx

re chill mats: My local Aldi's had them for $10. Friends bought two for their Irish wolfhound, who was happy to have them. You might check locally.
The eye-movement article is interesting. I think that's why photos that you think are going to be wonderful end up looking enh, because the lens picks up things the brain edits out. And why real-estate photos are often so poor.
