A determinant.

Another cloudless, sunny, soon to be hot, start to our day. Sophie heads off down the track through the fields at his speed. Our return progress up the hill as the early morning heat builds starts to lose some of its pace.

A young fox darts out of the wheat stubble and races into a coppice. Sophie thinks of giving chase but decides breakfast is of more importance. There are some workmen putting up signs by the crossroads. Unusual for anyone to be working on a Sunday and even odder they should be doing it so early. When we get closer we see that they're Tour de France signs. The race will be coming through here in a couple of weeks and roads will be blocked off. The charm of the Tour de France is that sometimes a moment of excitement and glamour comes to even the sleepiest corners of the Republic.

We head off in the car for the breakfast baguettes and something for lunch.

At the bakers there is a large cake that is covered entirely in chocolate. It has a raspberry filing. At thgis time of the morning raspberry en masse seems a bit challenging.

We opt instead for a small raspberry tartlet and  a chocolate eclair. The bakers wife tells me her  brother in law has gone down with Covid. ' He's only twenty ' she adds as if age was somehow a determinant in who gets it.

This coming week will be one of great excitement - but that story can wait until tomorrow.

Raspberry tart and chocolate eclair seems to be an excellent choice. The article on heat was very interesting. It is currently 32 degrees and 75% humidity in Tokyo, after a few days of cooler weather. No comment on the Subway story - we folks from New Jersey take our submarine sandwiches much too seriously to deal with imposters.

Raspberry tartlet every time.
We've been taking shorter early morning walks as the thermometer nudges 30ยบ by 7 a.m. If we go out earlier, it's still dark. Half an hour is enough for Inca these days - she's an old lady now and prefers to proceed at a genteel pace.

The Tour went right in front of our house two years in a row--once in each direction. And, yes, they come in the dead of night to paint the islands in the road so the cyclists can see them better, and they do other things, like blast air horns, causing residents to nearly jump through the ceiling from their beds, where they had been in deep slumber.
The upside is that we had prime seats, enviable access to clean toilets and plenty of sponsor goodies that went over the wall and landed in the yard.
Subway is revolting.

The cycling enthusiast in this house will be watching the Tour de France on TV with even more than the usual interest as it passes through your neck of the woods!
