It's hot but this doesn't stop an unexpected gust of piercingly cold mountain wind from creeping up and catching the PONette unawares. This results in our day starting with a brief but pronounced double ear malfunction. Sophie is not amused.
When we get home there's a little red Suzuki Swift parked outside the near gate with its engine running. Loic gets out. He cheerfully tells me that he's had pains in his chest and that the doctor at the hospital has told him to rest. ' I won't be here to blow leaves for a month or two ' he says. The matron of the home is in the little cars drivers seat. She walks over to the gate and tells me he so wanted to come over and deliver this news in person. 'He's been pestering me for four days solid '. She then goes on to say ' I'll call you later to let you know what's going on'. Loic seems unperturbed. He squats down and gives the PONette a long cuddle which is gratefully received. She gives him a triple lick. He squeals with joy. Loic is one of Gods happy and uncomplicated people.
This is lovely and very Princeton :https://www.quantamagazine.org/june-huh-high-school-dropout-wins-the-fields-medal-20220705

Aw Sophie-cheri... that's quite the coiffure. Mind you, I haven't dared look at mine yet this morning. Thanks for loving on Loic and letting Angus share you and these events with us. Brightens many a dull day. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
I hope that it's nothing serious with Loic. And thank you for the amazing story about the Fields prize winner.
That double ear wing thing you have going there Sophie is quite fetching.
Do keep us updated on Logic’s health. Good on Sophie for giving him such love. Mind you, she will miss her leaf piles, won’t she! How wonderful the academic world found a place for such a remarkable mind. As someone who’s mathematically challenged, I appreciate other’s abilities.
We too hope that there's nothing seriously wrong with the delightful Loic. How much happier this world would be with more simple, uncomplicated people like him.
Overnight storms here, thunder, sheet lightning, and rain. We'll pay for it today with high humidity.
No breakfast croissants today?
Sound like the time has come for Angus and Sophie to start regular visits to the garden of the home Loic is at so Loic and others can pat and see Sophie and have the best day ever! If there is food involved on these visits (arranged with the matron) Sophie will also have the best day ever!
Fingers crossed for Loïc.
Stumbled across this, which you might like. I just signed up for the podcast, Ones & Tooze.
From the Atlantic: Not too long ago, Adam Tooze was an obscure academic. Now he’s among the world’s most influential financial commentators, with loyal readerships in Washington, London, Paris, and Brussels, as well as on Wall Street.

Ears with a mind of their own and a humble mathematician with a mind of his own, quite charming in different ways. I, too, hope Loic remains well enough to return to leaf blowing.
Taste of France - Yes Adam Tooze is very good indeed.
How very much your, ‘The Font’, and Sophie’s kindness means to Loic, that he would want to deliver his news to you in person. I am sure Sophie’s thoughtful licks made his entire week! May his health improve.
I hope that all will be well with Loic. What a delightful picture of Sophie with her ears deployed!
