Our shutter management routine now well established. In the morning every window opened wide from six thru nine to let the cool morning breezes in. Then as the sun rises over the village green the house is once again closed and firmly shuttered against the heat.
Bob lies in the front door to make sure no errant squirrels attempt to gain entry.
Sophie sits in the garden to enjoy the fresh air then heads into the kitchen in search of any remnants of yesterdays dinner. Sophie lives in the hope that 'The Font' will develop a neurological disorder that causes the patient to clear out the refrigerator and dump all its contents on the floor. She is disappointed. Maybe tomorrow ?
This morning the family princess spends a full five minutes standing glaring at the village pond. She can hear the waterfowl but not see them. How frustrating is that ? Bob watches The Old Farmer and the Belgian lady load up the venerable Ford Transit motorhome with bottles of beer and baguettes. They are going to the local lake to have a picnic and avoid the heat. The Old Farmer helps the Belgian lady clamber up into the passenger seat by giving her an indecorous push on her rump. She roars with laughter. We can still hear them laughing as the motorhome reaches the crossroads.
For the 50th anniversary of the moon landing the US Air Force published this picture of the surviving Apollo astronauts. Check out Buzz Aldrin ! The gentleman behind him with the braid on his dinner jacket is sporting a style I've never seen before. The 5 conservatively dressed gentlemen with the starched shirts and studs are presumably Annapolis graduates.

Just a curious question from a US dweller. Do you not have insects? If we left our windows/doors open like that we would have so many flies, we couldn't stand it. Wish we could have open air like that. Love you stores. The dogs drew me in, but the small village stores keep me coming back
Insects ? Good question. In the afternoon we get a few flies, quite a lot of wasps, flotilla of butterflies and a host of bees of every shape and size. On a humid day some mosquitoes. First thing in the morning not a thing.
How wonderful Bob is guarding against squirrels! If I left the door opened here, there would be an assortment of party animals. Please tell me about the picture to the right of the kitchen window?!?

People underestimate the cooling effect of the window opening trick. We have a similar routine at our place.
We spent three months in the mexican highlands in San Miguel de Allende, Peter would open all the windows first thing in the morning to let the warm air in to heat the stone house. It was very cold overnight but by mid morning it was very warm.
If The Font loathes the pug clock, why is it still on the kitchen wall?
The last time I saw a dinner jacket with that kind of braid trim was maybe in the '70s. I met some of those folks once in a social setting; they were quite short and had large egos.
Angus bought it for an exorbitant price and refuses to see it go in the trash. It has already been rescued from oblivion once. I fear it may go there again.

I find it wonderfully reassuring that The Font loathes that clock probably as much as I do.
There is a solution for odd clocks and other things of that sort: eBay.
