Christmas Carol #11

First light. Sophie stands at the front door, looks around , then sniffs the air to make sure there are no errant C-A-T-S around.

We head off on our pre-breakfast walk. My shaggy companion ignores the herd of log reindeer on the village green.

Down by the waterfall Sophie looks behind to make sure that I'm still there. Can it be that she wants to make sure that Angus is there to rescue her in case she falls in ? Can dogs be that aware ? Or, is she simply irritated that I'm not keeping up ?

After a lengthy drink dog, followed by master, trudge back up the hill to The Rickety Old Farmhouse. Mud, long grass and occasional drizzle combine to  give Sophie a certain 'country style' look. On our way back we discuss the chances of Ivanka winning a Florida Senate seat in '22 and Laura doing the same in North Carolina. Sophie wonders if Don Jr will run in Missouri . The man with anger management issues passes us as he's driving off to work. He stops, lowers the window, and tells us that he hasn't got a date for the court date. ' This will be the fourth time it's postponed M'Ongoose. The fourth time !'. Satisfied that I've understood the enormity of the delays he drives off.

The brown quilted blankets do a good job of soaking up the mud that would otherwise go on the impractical white carpets. Shame they don't sell this more absorbent type in Europe :https://www.soggydoggydoormat.com/pages/whats-the-secret

Great meteorite showers last night. There is one more great, rare, thing to watch out for :https://www.theintelligencer.com/opinion/article/Robert-Miller-When-Jupiter-and-Saturn-appear-as-15795030.php

We don't know about doormats Angus, but F's got a floor wiper thing she got in Greece which is made out of a mat of that soggy doggy stuff. We call it the 'dreadlocks mop'. She uses it for soaking up dust on account of having more of that than soggy dogs. Regards Mr T

After a week of near continuous rainfall in Aberdeen, one, or in fact several, of those super absorbent mats would come in very handy!
I'm not by nature an angry person, but I suspect having a court case postponed four times might test that!
I think Sophie looking back at you is just keeping an eye on her flock.
Cheers, Gail.

Mmmm - Inca wonders if your French C-A-T-S smell any different to our Spanish variety? We have a sassy little black kitten who regularly comes into the garden and treats it as though it's his/her own. It lies in the sun and Inca just stares at it with disdain, but hasn't bothered to chase it. She's either becoming extremely tolerant in her old age, or her eyesight is failing. Rather suspect the former, as she can see a treat at a hundred paces!

Hello Angus,
Thank you for your soggy doggy tip. Purchased one for my neighbor, as well.
For the first time I caught my dog traversing our iced-over large pond. The pond has several Springs and those places are open water and naturally, have thin ice surrounding them. I have enjoyed letting my dog roam on her own, checking on her now and then. Now that won't be possible.

It looks like Sophie's winter coat has grown in very luxuriantly this year - and I do think she is looking back to make sure you're their to rescue her, just in case. She doesn't have that "why can't you keep up" look today. It is one of my greatest regrets that neither my kids nor my husband has ever seen a meteor shower. I only saw one great one myself, lying in a field in upstate New York, but it was an amazing experience and I am determined they must also see one. I've wasted too many hours looking pointlessly at the Tokyo night sky, and finding a place where we can see the stars is one of the things I ponder when working on my "where shall we move when we go to America (assuming the coast is clear)" project. In the meantime, I am working on the puppy project. I became excited about the prospect of a Tibetan terrier, as supposedly the PON breed can be traced back to Tibetan terriers (and Pulis, which are nonexistent here and too big for our building). Unfortunately, Tibetan terriers are on the list of short-nosed dogs that are banned by many airlines. We have enough to worry about with two parrots who will need CITES permits when we leave. One of them was born in Riverside County, California and came with us to Japan in 1992, so that should be OK, but with bureaucrats, you never know.

A dog will be sure to find thin ice.

Years ago when trying to find another pair of PONs we considered alternatives. A Bearded Collie is the closest to a PON but I know zero about their characters. They seem to be much more popular. Border Collies are pretty much like PONs in the smarts category so perhaps a Beardie has similar traits ?

I'm sure our village C-A-T-S have a 'particular' odour.

Guess you didn't see the meteorite showers .

If only they made a 'dreadlocks' carpet we'd be first in line to get one for the front door.

Anyone who owns a car with white carpeting (dog or not) should check out WeatherTech, manufacturers of amazing protective floor mats. May not be available in Europe, but perhaps one of the CC's could forward them on to you from the States.

The Trumps overestimate their power as a family me thinks.

Enjoy Sophie's paw print art! Luckily we are going into summer here, so less mud inside for awhile. Dirty Dog make a runner (60x30 inches - rubber backed) or you could get a door mat for her to lie on in your car, when you buy your next book order from Amazon. For more options and ifno (who knew there was so much to consider about muddy smelly paws) https://www.mypetneedsthat.com/doormat-for-dogs/

Lisa, I've only just seen the post about dear Cherry. My heart is sad for your family's loss of such a treasured friend. I've enjoyed your posts about Cherry, where her wonderful personality shone. May you find just the right new family member to bring you the happiness Cherry has.
