Shouting.

It's the height of the owl mating season. The time of the year when they congregate on the The Rickety Old Farmhouses gutters for long, amorous chats. The gutter facing the lane is particularly popular. Owl courting takes place in the small hours and involves one owl shouting loudly at the other. Sometimes all the owls screech at each other at the same time. This produces a sound not unlike a saw cutting through concrete.

Angus starts his day suffering from mild owl induced sleep deprivation.  Sophie, of course, snores through it all. 'The Font' has headed back to the dentist in London for the installation of a new crown and has had a quiet and peaceful nights sleep in the super trendy hotel in the middle of town.

This morning we head off along the lane, detour to the orchid field ( it's such a wonder I've made a conscious decision to visit it twice a day ) and then dog leg through the village to open the church.

On the way back to the gate I hear a muffled ' M'Ongoose. M'Ongoose'. The Old Farmer is changing the oil in the venerable Mercedes.  His left leg has fallen asleep and he's a having difficulty pulling himself out from under the car.

I help him to his feet while Sophie looks on bemusedly. Tomorrow, The Old Farmer informs me, he's going to change the fan belt.

So starts a new day with a Polish Lowland Sheepdog in a small French village where nothing ever happens.

No wonder that Mercedes had done so many miles - how often does he change the oil? We feel sure you have mentioned it not long ago.

Both Sophie and the Old Farmer are remarkably resilient.
Aren't those lupines in your field?

Lovely photo of the Old Farmer and his Mercedes. Yesterday I paid the garage £700 to put right a number of 'wear and tear' issues on my car, which I've no doubt the Old Farmer could easily have sorted out for himself.
As for the mating owls, I'd suggest wearing earplugs and cultivating an attitude of gratitude for the owl's enthusiasm in ensuring the line of succession.
Cheers! Gail.
PS Last night Nobby demonstrated excellent political judgement by enthusiastically shredding the local election leaflet from the Alba Party...

Beautiful orchids , we had one in the field one year but it never appeared again .
I wonder what an amorous gathering of owls is called .

I too wonder at the oil change frequency on the venerable vehicle! Still, if it also keeps TOF 'running', then it serves a dual purpose... maybe he now needs to add in antifreeze! YAM xx

The engine in the venerable old Mercedes looks immaculate, and Old Farmer doesn't look his age. Must be all the work on his various vehicles that keeps him young!
Poor Sophie, just as she's getting used to high cuisine again, the standard slips somewhat when one of her flock goes missing. Not even a curly croissant end to make amends?

Is that what a car looks like under the hood (bonnet?) A mystery to me. It is good to see Sophie enjoying the walks again.

Love seeing the Old Farmer. Dare I say, he looks not old at all...and very French!

So Angus and Sophie are in charge of the ROF cuisine in The Font's absence? Thank goodness you were nearby to rescue The Old Farmer (a fine looking gentleman) from beneath his venerable vehicle! Such assorted dramas in such a small village!
